June 28, 2007, Rochester, NY – On Friday, July 13th, from 6 PM - 9 PM, The Baobab Cultural Center will open Bangalore based artist Ajay Gulati's latest collection of 'Sculpture on Canvas'. The exhibition will remain on display until July 22 nd.
The Baobab is excited to expose the Rochester community and provide special access to these inspiring works by Ajay as they tour the USA. The moods in the paintings, the brilliant use of color, the relief, and the explosive sentiments will leave you searching for answers to some of the questions Ajay's works evoke. Women in particular are in for a liberating experience and we invite all to come with an open mind and appetite for art at its best.
With the international art market discovering the unique styles and spirit of Indian Contemporary Art, this is the first of many invitations that Ajay Gulati has received to return to the United States after capturing the attention of patrons during previous exhibitions in San Francisco, CA and at the Indian Community Center and Artist Row, last September, here in Rochester. Well known throughout India, Ajay's murals and paintings adorn many public and private spaces such as the Barista Coffee Shop chain and Hewlett Packard Offices, and exhibitions of his work have been held at many 5 star hotels.
Ajay's unique style, which he calls 'Sculpture on Canvas', derives from studies in isometric and perspective drawings that explore the depths of a third dimension on a two-dimensional surface. He then uses textures to enhance the drawings and colors to create a perception of distance, combining matter and thought. 'Sculpture on Canvas' produces a 3-D effect that gives increased perspective and tactility to Ajay's paintings, murals, and sculpture.
He says, "The intention of my work lies in absorbing and sharing the essence of those events and experiences that inspire in me the realization and an urge to improve myself in any way." More than just documenting and sharing his own search, his pieces contain the intrinsic quality of encouraging the viewer that they can do the same. Ajay Gulati's unique style, aesthetics, and contemporary expression have gained him international favor as one of the most recognized of the new breed of Indian Contemporary Artists.
